Which payer sources are accepted in assisted living? While this can vary from state to state, in Louisiana, there are no Medicare or Medicaid funds for assisted living. That is not specific to The Homestead Assisted Living, but is applicable to any assisted living facility in our state. Therefore, all assisted living residents are paying privately. Some residents who were wartime veterans, or are the surviving spouse of a wartime veteran, may qualify for some financial assistance through the Aid and Attendance Benefit offered through the Veterans Administration. If one qualifies, the financial assistance is paid directly to the resident, not the facility. Long term care insurance policies are the only other source of financial assistance for those residents who purchased them timely and meet the qualifications for the policy to make payments to them.
-
How much does assisted living cost and how does that cost compare to other options?Specific pricing at The Homestead is given on a tour. However, when compared to the private pay rate of the nursing home (sometimes referred to as a skilled nursing facility), assisted living care is less expensive than their $6,500.00 per month average in Louisiana. Assisted living care is also more affordable than the average cost of a private duty sitter in the home, which can cost up to $12,000.00 per month when needed on a 24 hour a day basis.
-
How are assisted living facilities licensed and how does that differ from nursing homes (skilled nursing facilities)? Both assisted living facilities and skilled nursing facilities are licensed under the Department of Health and Hospitals, but assisted living facilities are licensed residentially while nursing homes are licensed as a medical facility. Assisted living facilities are allowed to administer medications. Home health and hospice agencies often assist residents if other medical needs arise.
-
Which conditions are prohibited in assisted living? As per the regulations that all Louisiana facilities are governed under, the following conditions are prohibited at the time of admission in the assisted living setting: Stage 3 or 4 pressure ulcers, nasogastric tubes, ventilator dependency, dependency on a BiPap or CPAP without the ability to use the machine independently or without the ability to have a third party provide supervision, coma, continuous IV/TPN therapy, wound vac therapy, active and communicable TB, any condition requiring physical or chemical restraints. Some of those conditions may be found in the facility if they occur after the time of admission and/or if Hospice care is in place.
